History of Mexican Americans in Texas
The first groups of Texans of Mexican origin originate from Spanish colonization of Mexico. Originally Texas was ruled by Spain as part of its New Spain territory, with Spain first arriving in Mexico in 1520. Spanish men and Native American women had ''mestizo'' children. When Spanish rule in Texas ended, Mexicans in Texas numbered 5,000. In 1850 over 14,000 Texas residents had Mexican origin.〔"(Mexican Americans )." ''Handbook of Texas''.
